Mancala Online

Move, capture, and outsmart your opponent in this classic strategy game. Challenge the AI across three difficulty levels or take on a friend in local two-player mode. Quick to learn, tough to master!

Mancala is one of the oldest known board games, tracing back thousands of years to ancient Africa and the Middle East. The game is played by two players on a board with a series of small pits (also called houses or cups) and two larger pits (called stores or mancalas), one for each player.

Game Tips

  1. Plan Moves Ahead: Like chess, anticipate how your move will impact your next turn and your opponent’s next moves.
  2. Take Advantage of Free Turns: Try to land your last stone in your store to earn another move.
  3. Use the Capture Rule Strategically: Capture seeds from your opponent when possible to gain an advantage.
  4. Prevent Your Opponent from Capturing: Avoid leaving pits empty at key moments that would allow your opponent an easy capture.
  5. Control the Game’s End: If you see the game is nearing its end, try to ensure you have the most seeds collected in your store before the final turn.

Why is it called Mancala?

The name Mancala comes from the Arabic word naqala, meaning "to move", a fitting name for a game that revolves around moving pieces around the board. The term has Arabic roots because Mancala is believed to have originated in the Middle East and North Africa. Over centuries of play, it eventually made its way to the Western world.

How to Play

The objective of Mancala is to collect more seeds (or stones) in your store than your opponent by strategically redistributing seeds from the pits on your side of the board.

  • Setup: Each player starts with an equal number of seeds (usually four) in their own six pits. The larger pit (mancala) on each player's right is their store.
  • Turn Mechanics: Players take turns picking up all the seeds from one of their pits and distributing them, one by one, counterclockwise into the following pits (including their own store but skipping the opponent’s store).
  • Capturing Stones: If the last seed lands in an empty pit on your side and the opposite pit has seeds, you capture those seeds and place them in your store.
  • Free Turn: If the last seed lands in your store, you get another turn.
  • End of the Game: The game ends when one player has no more seeds left in their pits. The remaining seeds on the opponent’s side go into their store. The player with the most seeds in their store wins.
